social fabric

Since I’m increasingly inactive on social media, I’ve been making every effort to connect, socially, in person. So far, my life has been richer for it.

Which means lately, I’ve been contemplating -

·      what is good for the social fabric?

·      what rends (or tears) the social fabric?

I think each of us would answer these questions slightly differently, but most of us know in our gut which things make humanity’s future worse and which things are likely to lead to a better future.

I’m here to encourage us to visualize our actions within the social fabric being woven into the larger story and affecting humanity for generations.

The social fabric connects not only people to one another, but also countries, nations, the internet. The social fabric also connects us across time – the actions of those in the past and present are mingled in the fabric as it is today – with space at the edges for the future.

True to its name, social media has both strengthened and injured the social fabric.

Part of understanding the social fabric is to understand ourselves and our actions as we either weave sections of the fabric (through social connection, online and/or in person) or in antisocial ways that break the threads that bind a section.

I want to do as many things as possible that are healing and generative for the social fabric.

I want to participate in as few things as possible that tear that fabric to shreds.

I invoke the concept of social fabric into our consciousness, that we may, together, help one another mend and even beautify or expand it.

Until next time,

Jess
